Crixus update!!! July 5 2011

email - bichonlovers@sympatico.ca Bichon & Yorkie Lovers where dreams really do come true...
Hello Fern,

I hope all is well, I wanted to give you an update for Crixus. He's
almost 6 months old and doing extremely well, we have also moved to a
new home and are expecting a little boy (we were 2 weeks pregnant when
we picked him up). However, we are very happy and Crixus is doing
extremely well, he is doing his business outside and just loves us.
He's losing his teeth and biting a few things, but I'm sure all will be
over once all of his teeth fall out. He is doing extremely well, he
responds to commands and is just the most vocal little puppy with such a
personality like you could never believe. He makes us soo happy and
just a wonderful dog, again Thank you for letting us come by and giving
us such a wonderful little puppy. He makes us so happy and we will come
back soon to give him a friend once the baby is born.

Regards,
Vanessa

Written by: Laurinda Morris, DVM Danville Veterinary Clinic Danville , OHThis week I had the first case in history of raisin toxicity ever seen at MedVet. My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix that ate half a canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday. He started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking about 1 AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't call my emergency service until 7 AM. I had heard somewhere about raisins AND
grapes causing acute Renal failure but hadn't seen any formal paper on the subject. We had her bring the dog in immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet, and the doctor there was like me - had heard something about it, but... Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center and they said to give IV fluids at 1 & 1/2 times maintenance and watch the kidney values for the next 48-72 hours.
The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was already at 32 (normal less than 27) and creatinine over 5 (1.9 is the high end of normal). Both are monitors of kidney function in the
bloodstream. We placed an IV catheter and started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine over 7 with no urine production after a liter of fluids. At that point I felt the dog was in acute renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight as well as overnight care.
He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values continued to increase daily. He produced urine when given lasix as a diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting
medications and they still couldn't control his vomiting. Today his urine output decreased again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his
blood pressure, which had been staying around 150, skyrocketed to 220 ... He continued to vomit and the owners elected to Euthanize.

This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners
who had no idea raisins could be a toxin. Please
alert everyone you know who has a dog of this very serious risk.
Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's. Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern.
Onions, chocolate, cocoa, avocadoes and macadamia nuts can be fatal, too.

Even if you don't have a dog, you might have friends
who do. This is worth passing on to them.

Confirmation from Snopes about the above .....

Good Morning Fern,

Just wanted to let you know that Addie enjoyed the Royal Wedding this morning! We even got photos of her wearing her Tiera!  I'll snd photos when I get everything figured out about sending photos!!!

Addie is almost completely toilet trained1  She sleeps through the night, in her crate, beside my bed! Addie is doing better than my kids did, with sleeping through the night! Addie comes to her name! She is starting to sit for her meals.  Addie eats three meals with enthusiasm daily! (Consuming aproximately a half a cup of her kibble daily.)She loves to get her belly rubbed, and she rolls over, when she hears "Belly, belly, belly"!  Addie loves to go for car rides.  She has many toys that she fetches, chews on and tosses about! Addie is PERFECT! Thank you!!!!!

Have a great day!

Deb

WOW what a beauty!!!!
Addie May 5/2011

The Royal Wedding picture sent May 10/2011
I think Addie is eyeing the desert and not to interested in the wedding!!!
Hi Fern,
I hope that you are well.
Everything is terrific here. Addie continues to steal our hearts daily!
Addie has started a new behaviuor1  When Gord goes to work, I always give him a quick hug good-bye. Addie has decided that this looks pretty good. Therefore, now when I go to hug Gord goodbye, Addie whines and wants to be picked up and included in the hug.  This happens consistantly.  So we now call our hugs good-bye, our family hug!  Addie loves it!  What a little lover she is!
Enjoy this beautiful day!
Deb

I finally got around to sending you pictures of Summer Doll, did not know how to attach to the email.  Summer Doll has been just great.  Has grown into a really big beautiful girl . She is our spoiled baby. She is in great health and easy to care for.  I told you about the 5 year old Maltese we rescued and our kitty.  Summer Doll loves them but she is totally the Alpha in this house! Very nice blog.  Nice pictures.  You have your hands full with lots of little babies.  You were so right when we thought we wanted a young one and you suggested 5 month old Summer and her sibs.  You were so right Thank You!!!

Bob and Sheila and handsome big boy Abbot
Sheila writes: Good news - Abbot is slowly moving from puppy status to dog status.  He walks on the left side with a lead - listens to come - learning how to go down stairs - loves Bob and most of the residents - jumps into the car on his own, sits down in elevators, sniffed other dogs' scents and has met all the family, except Monica who lives in Ottawa.  He has been welcomed to the neighborhood by the neighbors. Sheila July 2nd /10

Doug and Jane and handsome tiny boy Costello! He may be small but he's still the man!!
Doug and Jane adore Costello and say he is such a good boy!
Jane writes:
Everyone loves Costello so much and we tell everyone about you so I hope that you get some business.

Costello is such a good puppy and rather smart.  He is aptly named as he is quite a comedian and we see more of this as he plays “tricks” on us.  When we throw his soft toy bone (the one you gave him) he runs upstairs and “hides” it.  When we say where is it, he runs and “finds” it and comes down as if this is the greatest joke ever.
Warm regards to you and David, July 16th/10
